BUFFALO, NY – On Tuesday, longtime UB Athletics supporter Tunney Murchie generously donated $100,000 to the Buffalo women’s basketball program to help fund their summer foreign tour to Spain.
This most recent gift by the Murchie family is the single largest gift ever made to the Buffalo women’s basketball program.
“I would like to personally thank the Murchie family for their unwavering commitment to UB and this athletic department,” said Director of Athletics Mark Alnutt. “We strive to give our student-athletes a first class experience here at the University at Buffalo and what better way to accomplish that, than to take our brand to an international stage.”
During the tour, the Bulls will travel to three cities – Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia – over ten days in June and will compete in three games, while also enjoying a cultural and intellectual experience never to be forgotten. They will get to see different parts of the world and experience different cultures, while also building their own. This trip will also allow the student-athletes to have additional training to prepare for competition in the upcoming 2020-21 basketball season and will also be a major recruiting tool as we make Buffalo a destination for top recruits.
“Firstly I would like to thank the Murchie family for all they have done for our community, University, and athletic department” said head women’s basketball coach Felisha Legette-Jack. “They have done a tremendous job of bringing notoriety to Western New York in so many capacities. People all over the country are recognizing Buffalo because the Murchie family has stepped up and said “We Matter!”
“Secondly, I am so humbled by Mr. Murchie’s recognition of our women’s basketball program. He reached out to us and said, women’s basketball I see you and I want to help. I was always taught to keep my head down and do the work and when the blessings come it will tap you on your shoulder. I can’t put into words what this act of kindness means to our program. He has given us more than finances, he has given us hope. With the leadership of Mr. Murchie and others in the community, our program here at Buffalo is allowing our young ladies to follow their dreams and become successful individuals in sports and in life. We Fight On!”
Murchie and his family have been steadfast supporters of UB Athletics and have been incredibly generous over the years, most notably the fieldhouse on campus that bears his family’s name.
Murchie is owner and president of Lackawanna Products Corporation in Clarence. He is a 1975 graduate of UB with a degree in management and also earned his MBA from UB in 1976. He played hockey for the Bulls from 1971-73 and was an assistant coach with the program in 1974.
This gift goes a long way towards helping achieve the $150,000 goal, but the team is counting on the continued support of alumni and fans to help make this trip possible. Any gift of any amount can make a huge impact on the lives of our student-athletes.
