BUFFALO, N.Y. – An anonymous gift to the University at Buffalo Blue and White Fund is honoring Edmond J. Gicewicz, MD, a member of the UB Athletics Hall of Fame and longtime friend and supporter of UB Athletics. The club was officially dedicated with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, September 3, 2015.
The new club seating section at UB Stadium will be named the Edmond J. Gicewicz Club in recognition of Gicewicz’s more than six decades of commitment and loyalty to the university as a student-athlete, distinguished alumnus, team physician, faculty member, athletics booster and volunteer leader.
“Doc has a truly special place in the heart of the UB family and has left his mark on so many elements of our university – from the UB Council to the medical school, our university alumni association and, of course, our athletic programs,” said UB President Satish K. Tripathi. “He is, and will always be, the embodiment of UB Bulls pride and spirit, and it’s wonderful to know that legacy will have a permanent place of honor in UB Stadium.”
“We’re grateful that Dr. Gicewicz’s dedicated commitment to the university inspired the anonymous donor to support UB athletics in such a meaningful way, and we are very proud to have the Gicewicz name on our new club seating section at UB Stadium,” said UB Athletic Director Danny White. “The new Edmond J. Gicewicz Club brings us one step closer to building America’s next big-time college athletics program.”
A 1952 graduate of UB, Gicewicz was a standout football, basketball and baseball player for the Bulls. He was a two-year team captain for the UB football team and, in 1951, was named a Little All-American. He went on to earn a medical degree from UB in 1956 and served as the football team physician for 27 years. Gicewicz was elected to the UB Athletics Hall of Fame in 1966 and the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.
Gicewicz has also filled many other important roles at UB, including serving as a member of the UB Council, the primary oversight and advisory body to UB, its president and senior officers. Among his leadership roles, Gicewicz has been president of the UB Alumni Association and the UB Medical Alumni Association, and founder and first medical director of the University Sports Medicine Institute, which continues to thrive today.
Gicewicz has held appointments as an assistant professor of clinical surgery and an assistant professor of clinical orthopedics in the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. He was honored by his alma mater with the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1977, the prestigious Samuel P. Capen Chancellor’s Award in 1978 and the UB President’s Medal in 2013.
Gicewicz and his wife, Connie, have remained lifelong supporters of the Bulls’ athletic programs. In 2007, the UB Athletics Hall of Fame was renamed the Dr. and Mrs. Edmond J. Gicewicz Family UB Athletics Hall of Fame.
The Edmond J. Gicewicz Club at UB Stadium will provide Bulls fans with an unparalleled setting in which to experience a football game day at UB Stadium. Spanning what is currently sections 204 through 208 on the stadium’s west side, the new, upscale club seating section will contain approximately 400 premium seats. There also will be a 2,000-square-foot climate-controlled lounge area featuring food and beverage service, flat-screen televisions and private restrooms. The Edmond J. Gicewicz Club at UB Stadium will provide the ultimate game-day experience.
